Ribbons was supported in part by a “National Endowment for the Arts Composer Fellowship” and an “Al Smith Artist Fellowship” from the Kentucky Arts Council. The work was premiered June 9, 1991, at the Maplemount Festival in Owensboro, Kentucky, Steve Rouse conducting.

The brief work is a confluence of four simultaneous, discontinuous, expanding variations. The seeds of the four variations all appear in the first five measure.
