Bolder was commissioned by the Kentucky Music Educators Association for the 2024 All-State Band and in memory of past KMEA president George Boulden III (1961-2022). Bolder is both a bold celebration and a tender remembrance of his life. The title refers to living with strength and courage.

George Boulden served as Associate Director of Bands at the University of Kentucky from 1 995-2022. He was the conductor of the Wildcat Marching Band from 1 995-2008 and the Symphony Band from 1 995-2022. George was a brilliant music educator, clinician, and adjudicator, garnering honors and accolades from his peers across the nation. He was respected and beloved by colleagues, students, family, and friends.

It was my honor to compose Bolder in memory of George. Although I didn’t know him in life, I spoke with many people who knew him well, and I viewed many videos of his performances and clinics. The descriptive phrase that recurred was “larger than life.” He loved life and lived it fully.

Bolder opens and closes with bright, strong fanfare music. Near the middle of the work, there is slow, pensive music, including a brief moment featuring the trombones, George’s primary instrument.
